What does swell period mean?
Swell period is the number of seconds between one wave and the next. It tells you how far the swell has travelled and how much energy it carries. Under 8 seconds is weak local windswell; 10 to 14 seconds is proper groundswell; 15 seconds and above is powerful, long-distance swell that will feel far bigger than the height suggests.

Why does period matter more than height?
Because energy scales with the square of the period. A 3 ft wave at 14 seconds carries several times the energy of a 3 ft wave at 6 seconds, even though the forecast shows the same number.
In practice this is the difference between a wave that stands up, holds its shape and gives you a proper ride, and one that crumbles the moment it feels the sand. If you learn to read one extra number beyond height, make it this one.
Why does long-period swell break bigger than forecast?
Long-period waves reach deeper into the water column, so they start to feel the seabed further out and jack up harder when they hit it. A 3 ft reading at 16 seconds can produce head-high faces at a shallow reef.
This is why an unremarkable-looking forecast sometimes turns out to be the best day of the month, and why the same number at a deep-water spot does very little.
Where does long-period swell come from?
From storms far out at sea. Waves leave a storm at a range of speeds, and the longest ones travel fastest, so they arrive first and arrive sorted - evenly spaced and lined up.
That sorting is what makes groundswell clean. Windswell has had no time to organise itself: it is generated close by, arrives jumbled, and looks like it in the water.
What period does a beginner want?
Around 8 to 11 seconds at a sandy beach break. Enough push to catch waves, not so much power that a set holds you under.
Long-period swell is not beginner-friendly, however small the number looks. A 2 ft reading at 17 seconds can mean a strong rip, a long paddle, and waves that break with more force than the height implies.

The one whose direction your spot actually faces. A big short-period swell from a blocked angle can be irrelevant while a smaller long-period swell from the right direction makes the day.
