Does tide matter for surfing?

Yes, for some breaks and barely for others. Tide changes how much water sits over the reef or sandbar, and that decides whether a wave stands up and peels or dumps and closes out. Reefs and points usually have a narrow window; most beach breaks work across the tide. The rule is to learn the window at the one or two spots you surf, not the tide in general.

Why does tide change the wave?

A wave breaks when it reaches water shallow enough to trip it up. Raise the water by a metre and the same bottom is a metre deeper, so the wave breaks later, softer, and sometimes not at all. Drop it a metre and the wave breaks earlier and harder - over a reef, possibly onto rock.

That is the whole mechanism. Every other effect - the peeling, the closing out, the backwash off a steep beach at high tide - follows from how much water is over the bottom.

Which breaks care most?

Reefs and slabs. A reef that is perfect with a metre of water over it is a closeout with two and a dry rock with none, so its window can be an hour or two either side of one tide state. Points are next: low tide often exposes the rocks at the top of the point and shortens the ride.

Beach breaks care least. The sand moves with the tide anyway, and most sandbars work through the middle of the tide and only lose shape at the extremes - very low, when the bank is too shallow and waves dump, or very high, when the water is too deep and they roll through unbroken.

Does the direction of the tide matter?

Often. An incoming tide pushes water onto the beach and tends to make waves fuller and more forgiving; an outgoing tide drains it and often makes them hollower and faster, and can strengthen rip currents. Some spots are known as 'pushing tide' waves for this reason. It is a smaller effect than the height, and it varies enough by spot that only local knowledge settles it.

How do I find my spot's tide window?

Surf it at different tides and notice. Or ask - it is the one thing every local will tell you. Guides and forecasts record an optimal tide for well-known breaks; treat that as a starting point, since a sandbar's window moves with the sand. Common questions

Is high or low tide better for surfing?

Neither in general. Reefs often want lower water to break properly, beach breaks want the middle of the tide, and a few spots need high. Learn the window at your own spot.

Does tide matter at a beach break?

Less than at a reef. Most sandbars work through the middle of the tide and only lose shape at the extremes.

What does 'mid tide' mean?

Halfway between low and high - roughly three hours after either. For most beach breaks it is the safest bet when you don't know the spot.

Why are there rips at low tide?

Draining water has to get back out to sea, and it does so through channels between sandbars. On an outgoing tide those channels run hardest.
