Why is Blacks so much bigger than the rest of San Diego?
An underwater canyon off the beach focuses swell into it, so it can be double the size of the beaches either side on the same day.
Is Blacks good for beginners?
No. Heavy, hollow, strong rips, and a long steep trail down that has to be climbed back up. Experienced surfers only.
How do I get to Blacks?
The trail from the Torrey Pines Glider Port car park, or the road down from La Jolla Farms with a permit. Both are steep.

Winter north-west groundswell, October to March, with a long period and a Santa Ana morning.
