Worth knowing

Watch for pollution after rain, crowds, urban beach.

Best from October to April.

Train from Lisbon to Carcavelos, ten minutes' walk.

Common questions

Is Carcavelos good for beginners?

On a small day, yes - sandy, with surf schools along the beach and a train from Lisbon. On a big winter swell it is a heavy, crowded beach break for experienced surfers.

What swell does Carcavelos need?

West or south-west. It faces south into the Tagus mouth, so a straight north-west swell passes it by while Guincho, twenty minutes away, is overhead.

How do I get to Carcavelos from Lisbon?

The Cascais line from Cais do Sodré, about 25 minutes, then a ten-minute walk from Carcavelos station.

Is the water clean at Carcavelos?

Usually - but not for a few days after heavy rain, when the Tagus and the storm drains empty into the bay.
