Common questions

Why is Sunset Beach hard to surf?

The peak shifts across a wide, deep reef, the paddle is long, and a strong current runs west along it. Reading where the next set will stand up is the whole skill.

How big does Sunset get?

It holds anything up to about fifteen feet Hawaiian, when most of the coast is closing out. Its best size is eight to twelve.

What swell does Sunset need?

North-west to north. A west swell makes it a different, more closed-out wave; north-west lines up the point.

Is Sunset good for intermediates?

Not on a real swell. On a small autumn or spring day the inside can be manageable, but it is an expert wave when it is the wave people mean.
