Surfing in Canggu
Canggu is a single west-facing stretch of black sand and reef, and every break on it takes the same south-west swell and the same dry-season easterly wind. What separates them is the bottom: Batu Bolong is a slow, long reef wave that suits longboards and beginners, Echo Beach is a faster reef-and-sand peak, and Berawa, Nelayan and Pererenan are beach breaks that pick up more size.
Because the wind and swell are shared, the ranking on any given day is about size and tide - which break holds the swell best at the tide you can get in the water. This page does that from today's forecast, using the same model as the app, and includes Seminyak and Kuta to the south for the days when Canggu is too big.
Where should a beginner surf in Canggu?
Batu Bolong, known as Old Man's, is the beginner wave of Bali: slow, long and soft, with a sandy inside and surf schools all along the beach. Kuta Beach and Legian to the south are the sandy fallback on a bigger day.
Echo Beach gets fast and shallow on a low tide and is better left to intermediates. All of Canggu is crowded; early mornings are quieter.
When is the best time to surf Canggu?
April to October is the dry season, when south-west groundswell meets easterly trade winds that blow offshore all morning - this is when Canggu is at its best. November to March brings westerly winds that blow onshore here and make the east coast of Bali the better choice, though Canggu still works early in the morning on many days.
