Surfing in Kuta
Kuta is where most people surf their first wave in Bali: a long, gently sloping sand beach running north from the airport through Legian to Seminyak, facing west into the same south-west swell as the rest of the island but softened by the shallow shelf in front of it. On a small dry-season morning it is as friendly as surf gets.
Just offshore, Kuta Reef and Airport Rights are a different proposition - proper reef waves a short boat ride out, which is where the beach's surfers go once they've outgrown it. This page ranks the beach peaks and the reefs together from today's forecast, using the same model as the app.
Where should a beginner surf in Kuta?
Kuta Beach and Legian. Sand bottom, gentle slope, small waves most mornings, and more surf schools and board rentals than anywhere in Asia. Seminyak is the same beach with a bit more size and fewer learners.
Kuta Reef and Airport Rights are not for learning - they are reef breaks reached by boat, and Airport Rights in particular gets fast and shallow.
When is the best time to surf Kuta?
April to October, the dry season, for clean morning conditions on an easterly offshore. The beach works year-round though, and in the wet season it is often the most surfable thing on the west coast because it handles the onshore wind better than the reefs. Afternoons get onshore in any season; surf early.
Common questions
Is Kuta Beach good for beginners?
Yes - it is the best beginner beach in Bali. Sand, gentle waves, and surf schools along its whole length.
What time of day is best to surf Kuta?
Early morning, before the sea breeze turns onshore around late morning. This holds all year.
Is Kuta or Canggu better for learning?
Kuta for a first lesson - it is sand rather than reef and the waves are smaller. Batu Bolong in Canggu is the next step.
What is Kuta Reef?
A left-hand reef break a few hundred metres off Kuta Beach, reached by boat from the beach. Best around head high on a mid to low tide.
When is Kuta's surf biggest?
June to August, when the dry-season groundswell peaks. Even then the beach itself stays manageable because of the shallow shelf.
