Common questions
Is Backdoor good for beginners?
No, never. It is a shallow, sharp reef at the foot of the Carmel with a hollow, fast wave and a strong current. Beginners learn at The Peak or Hof Maxim to the south.
When does Backdoor work?
A big, organised north-western swell with a south-east wind, mostly December to February. On most other days Bat Galim next to it is the better wave.
What is the difference between Backdoor and Bat Galim?
The same reef, a different section: Backdoor is shallower, hollower and shorter. Bat Galim is longer, more forgiving and works more days a season.
How do you get to Backdoor?
From the Bat Galim promenade; park in the neighbourhood streets. Bring a 3/2 wetsuit for the December to February season.
